How about the experience of staying a night in a former prison? The Barabas Hotel & Hostel offers the possibility to sleep behind bars in Lucerne. The historical building was the Central Prison of the city from 1862 up till 1998.
Fun facts about the Barabas
-Located just 900 m from the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne Old Town;
-A guillotine used up to 1940 in Lucerne, and other Cantons in Switzerland was stored here before has been transferred to the Lucerne Historical Museum;
-The Jail Hotel was opened in 1999, one year after the Central Prison was transferred to Kriens, and works up to 2017;
-In 2004, the Lions Club was the location for concerts and parties, where today the breakfast room is located;
-The name Barabas comes from a talented prisoner, who’s refusing his self to military service;
-60 different prison cells are available, including the Library and the Director’s room;
-The Barabas suite can accommodate up to 4 people (there are two cells in one).
Breakfast can be booked separately from the Room price, up the night before for Fr. 9.50- on the same morning, the price goes to Fr. 13.50- per person.
The breakfast buffet included honey, jam, homemade bread, porridge, juice, coffee, and scrambled eggs.
You can buy at the reception tickets for day trips with 10% off. Pilatus Golden roundtrip (Fr. 92- per person), Mount Rigi (Fr.103.-per person).
There are rooms with a shower/toilet inside/outside the room (check it out on the reservation).
Check-in time is at 14:00 pm and check-out at 11:00 am.
Wifi is available in the rooms.
Lucerne Guest card (free transportation and internet in Lucerne center) will be sent by E-mail before the arrival. If you don’t receive them they can print you at the reception.
There is no lift/elevator on the building, rooms are on the first, second, and third floor. Update – new elevator for guests!
