For all fans of airplanes and warships, the Museum sits on the Aircraft Carrier USS Intrepid, which completes 75 years in 2018. USA National Historic Landmark, Intrepid was used in the Second World War, in the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Today anchored in Pier 86, Hudson River impresses visitors by its dimensions. Four fixed exhibitions are part of the museum; they are:

Intrepid Aircraft Carrier

-Flight Deck: More than twenty original fighter planes, helicopters restored, and their stories. Featured is the hunting Blackbird 1967, which flew at 80,000 feet and could photograph the enemy area, an unprecedented fact at the time. No other plane could fly at that altitude, much less, shoot down the Blackbird.
-Gallery Deck: Combat Information Center (CIC) with radar and communication equipment and Squadron Ready Room, where the military pilots received the last instructions before takeoff.
-Hangar Deck: Film on the History of Intrepid, the multimedia exhibition “Kamikaze Day of Darkness, Day of Light, “regarding the 25th of November 1944, when the Intrepid was struck by two Japanese kamikazes’ planes, killing 69 crew members and testimony of the Single survivor.
-Third Deck: Crew Accommodation

Submarine Growler

Part of the exhibition since 1989, it is the only submarine used in American Army operations open to public visitation. We can see it in the control area, the central attacks outside the missile firing area on the front and back of the submarine. The kitchen and crew area can also be visited. I didn’t feel very well inside the submarine, maybe because I was pregnant, but was so tight and smells so strong, that it makes me nervous even just thinking about being submerged in one of those!!! I’m glad about the experience, but I don’t need to visit another submarine soon =)

British Airways Concorde

We can admire the legendary Concorde G-BOAD supersonic aircraft, which flew between 1976 and 2001 when the Concorde stopped operating. Incredible how they could hit Mach 2 (means fly 2,500 km/h*) or twice the speed of sound, and fly between Europe and the United States in less than 3 hours. Remembering that from the Concorde it was possible to observe the curvature of Earth at cruising altitude and flew faster than the movement of Earth rotation. For all this, Concorde has changed the History of commercial aviation. To see the Concorde inside, a guided tour is necessary.

Space Shuttle Pavilion

Since 2012, Space Shuttle Enterprise, prototype of the NASA probe belongs to is exposed in the museum. Divided into 17 parts, with objects, audios, and original photos of the space operation.

Veterans Day and Memorial Day

Every year, ceremonies and honorable mentions honoring 250 soldiers who lost their lives on board, bring families from all over the country to the Intrepid. The museum has an assistance program for military families and war veterans.

What’s best for kids here?

The “Exploreum” is an interactive exhibition dedicated to children and young people with a Helicopter, Interactive Submarine, and LEGO Intrepid! Amazing!
