Here some practical information for a great family Blausee Lake Day trip on the Nature Park Blausee, Canton Bern – Switzerland.
Blausee Lake is located in Kandersteg Region, Canton Bern, Switzerland. It’s about 1 hour by car from Bern city and 1:30 from Zurich or Lucerne. Nearest train stations: Frutigen or Kandersteg. After with the Bus Post Auto to Blausee station.
Arriving by the Lake, you are going to see it why this great deep blue color is always on Social Media and for sure fells the magical atmosphere around this place.
-How the Blausee got its color
Once upon a time, a young maiden who gave her heart to a young shepherd was living nearby.
On the bright evenings, when the moonlight was shining down on the dark treetops of the firs and while it was swiping its silver furrow thru the water, the two of them were wandering the short distance to the lake, got onto a boat and dreamt away some beautiful hours of their young lives.
Then the shepherd was falling down to death over a cliff as he was walking down from the rocks with a load of hay. From that moment on, the young maiden was brokenhearted. In the midnight hour, she was often sneaking up to the lake, rowing up to the middle, and was leaving herself to her pain while she was screaming her mind to the heavens to give her back her love or simply to be at odds because of his horrible fate.
That’s how the child’s senses became slowly distracted. Vainly the parents warned her to give up the nightly visits – a secret force was attracting the unhappy one to the same place where she was once so happy.
One morning one found the boat and the young maiden on the bottom of the lake. But the water which wasn’t much different from the water of other lakes before suddenly was deep blue: People were saying, it would be because of the tears of the poor young maiden which were escaping from her blue eyes.
Things to do
Don’t miss it to it the Boat Tour, included on Ticket fee (from Mai to October). Just beside the Lake, there is a great picnic/grill area for families. Also, a big playground for kids and smooth walkways around the Lake, accessible with a stroller.
Hotel Blausee Restaurant
In our first visit to Blausee Lake, we had lunch at the Restaurant Blausee Hotel. I have to say that wasn’t good – what surprises me a lot. Despite the high prices for the main courses, around Fr.35/40, I’ve ordered a fish, and this was extremely salty. The service was slow, and no one came for asking how the food was, standard practice in Switzerland. I had to eat; I had no choice. For my son, I’ve ordered a Kids Menu, also on the highest border of usual prices in Switzerland, Fr.15. The Kids portion was so small that my son cried when the food was finish; my two years old was still hungry. For him, I’ve ordered some more fish, and the Restaurant offered the Kids Menu for free. We haven’t a good experience at the Hotel Blausee, but we ate with a view =) Next time, no doubt I will take a picnic and some sausages with me!
